Ultherapy: A Non-Surgical Way to Lift and Tone the Skin

Aging…. It’s expected, it’s normal, and it’s a blessing! And as you keep your head up high, you still want to look your best each step of the way. So while many may tout their wrinkles as mementos of life (probably not too many), the drooping effect that finally kicks in sings a different kind of song. There comes a day when you simply cannot achieve a “fresh” or “vital” look any longer, and it isn’t in your hands. As you lather on the best creams on the market, there is only so much a person can do. Should you consider plastic surgery when deep down it just doesn’t feel like the right time yet? Should you rely on fillers and Botox to pick up the pieces? It all depends. Now, what if I told you that you could lift up the droopy effect non-surgically in the span of an afternoon?

I spent some time with ENT & Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. A.J. Hasbini, the Medical Director of GOMAC – Green Oasis Medical Aesthetic Center. With over 25 years of experience in the field, he has a special interest in Ear Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery including Primary and Revision Rhinoplasties (nose jobs), lip augmentation, and facial contour changes procedures. He introduced me to a non-invasive procedure that many of you out there will surely be interested in; it’s a scar-less mini-facelift procedure called Ultherapy.

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is a non-surgical ultrasound treatment for counteracting the effects of time and gravity on your skin. It is a 30-60 minute treatment for the face, neck, and décolleté that uses the body’s own regenerative response to gently and gradually restore memory to the skin and the underlying tissue support system. So while wrinkles may very well reveal experience to others, droopiness can suggest fatigue. Ultherapy is an ultrasound procedure that stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin deep within the skin. And as you may already you know, ultrasound energy has been used for over half a decade in the field of medicine and has a proven track record. Clinical trials have proven the safety of this latest application as well. It is the only non-invasive procedure that is CE and FDA-approved to lift skin on the brow area, the neck, under the chin, and on the décolleté.

How does the procedure actually work?

As we all age, the collagen in our skin loses strength and elastin starts to break down, causing our skin to become droopy. This ultrasound procedure works by going into the body safely, passing the skin, and combating this issue deep within. Ultherapy is different for the fact that instead of the ultrasound diverging, it converges into a focal point, and then continues on. So, unlike lasers and radio frequency, which penetrate the skin from the outside-in, this therapy works from the inside-out to lift and tighten the skin in a non-invasive way, and hence, is a scarless procedure. It delivers focused ultrasound energy of depths of up to 4.5 mm, the same foundational layer normally addressed in a surgical facelift. The skin responds to this energy by stimulating the growth of new collagen and elastin.

How would you describe the feeling endured during the procedure?

We are talking about ultrasound here, which transmits energy through the layers of your skin; so you can expect some mild discomfort, but this is only temporary. It actually signifies that the collagen-building process has kicked in. Patients vary and so do their thresholds. It is my job to make the experience as pleasant as possible, and when the client sees the results in the mirror, he/she will undoubtedly be pleased. Generally, clients walk out enthusiastic and comfortable.

Who can we classify as the ideal candidate for Ultherapy?

Ladies and gentlemen generally between the ages of 35 and 55 – sometimes younger, sometimes older, depending on the quality of the skin. A suitable candidate for Ultherapy is a person with relaxed skin that has reached the point where it looks and feels saggy and less firm. Ultherapy is ideal for those who aren’t ready for plastic surgery just yet...  but are ready for an effective treatment that offers visible effects. Ultherapy can offer just the right amount of lifting and effectiveness to make the client feel renewed and refreshed.  We choose our clients carefully and inform them about what this machine can do and its limitations. The skin should not have a lot of sun damage and there shouldn’t be a lot of redundancy in the skin because while we can tighten the skin, we cannot completely lift it.

Can a client who has already had a facelift, or Botox and filler treatments, have Ultherapy done?

Yes, definitely. In regards to Botox and hyaluronic acid injections, I would wait for at least a month after having any treatment.

Are results immediately visible?

There is a 15% difference in the very beginning, which builds up to 100% over a short period of time. I was the first person to invest in this machine in the Middle East and was impressed at its effectiveness from the moment I was introduced to it. I have done over 100 Ultherapy treatments and have found the success of them unsurpassable. It is the perfect solution for individuals afraid to go under the knife… and for those who simply aren’t at that stage yet. It just takes one session to see results.
