5 Things NOT to do in the Gym

Congratulations… you invested in a gym membership. Good going! Now let’s get you on the right track with a few pointers… just in case you are still rough around the edges.


If you are serious about working out, here are 5 things you shouldn't be doing at the gym:

1. Flip through a magazine

If your goal is to workout effectively, flipping through a book or magazine while you’re on the treadmill or stationary bike is a big no-no. Doing so means you are simply not present in your activity and cannot possibly give it your all. Focus is a must! You need to focus on your performance in order to push ahead effectively.

2. Only participate in group classes

Group workouts are great. Problems arise when that’s all you do. If you’re spending too much time focusing on your instructor and looking in the mirror, you may not be getting an effective overall workout. 

3. Throw down your weights

Lowering weights down to the ground is as important as lifting them up. The same muscles that move the weights up perform work in controlling the weights down as well. This action is a major stimulus for the remodeling of muscle tissue.

4. Expect instant results

Your body won't change overnight. By following and dedicating yourself to a consistent training plan, you will achieve the physique you deserve in due time.  Be patient, persevere, and work hard. These are the ingredients to eventual success.

5. Go 5x in the first week

When you finally decide to join a gym, the temptation is to try to make up for years of laziness in the first week. This is not a good idea. Working out every day will leave you with DOMS, delayed onset muscle soreness. You need to rest for the body to repair itself.
