5 Steps to Eating Clean Starting Today

The concept of “eating clean” is nothing new, but the phrase itself has swept social media waves and healthy websites from here and beyond… and for good reason. The entire notion is based on simply eating whole, healthy, unprocessed foods.

 

Eating clean should be a no brainer because not only will it maximize your energy and enhance your health - it will put you on the right track as a health-conscious individual. The best part of all is that eating clean isn’t a diet – it’s a lifestyle – one that can be modified to fit anyone’s everyday routine.

 

Ready to get started? Here are 5 steps you can take today to get into the eating clean movement:

 

1. Focus on natural, whole foods and minimize processed foods

This is a great place to start! If it comes in a bag, can, box, or package, chances are it is processed - so think twice! Eating whole and natural foods will soon become a no-brainer for you.

 

2. Choose unrefined foods

Do your very best to increase the intake of whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice, in addition to legumes and beans. And did you know there are actually clean sugars too?! Honey and maple syrup could be a GO, as long as you can verify their natural quality.

 

3. Beware of salt, sugar, and fat

If you have managed to cut out all processed foods, you are already on the right track in this department! Clean and whole foods are usually low in all of these culprits. Have a sweet craving? Go for fruit!

 

4. Have smaller, more frequent meals

Surely you have heard this one before! Eating 5-6 small meals throughout your day is a very smart approach in your quest for eating clean. Why? Because it keeps blood sugar levels steady… which means you don’t feel sluggish and won’t be tempted to grab a chocolate bar.

 

5. Stick to calorie free water as your beverage of choice

Drinks loaded in calories can add as much as 500 extra calories to your intake per day. Soda, sweetened coffees, even many smoothies are loaded with excess calories. Stick to good old water which will keep you hydrated and energized. Why not add a slice of fruit, or even cucumber and mint to spruce it up?

 

Once you adopt the “eating clean” lifestyle, the health benefits will be abundant with time. And let’s face it; no one is the PERFECT eater either! So all long as you attempt to eat clean for at least 80% of the time, you will reap the benefits and it will eventually become second nature.
