We’ve all had THOSE days, you know, the days you pretty much feel like crap but push your ass into the gym because you don’t want to sit home feeling sorry for yourself? Yep, been there, done that.
And then, low and behold, you walk out of the gym an hour later with a bounce in your step and a fiery fitness face to kill because your workout just puts your mood back on track! Nope – you aren’t imagining things since a recent study has revealed how a single workout can take your mood from mad to glad!
According to a new study published in the Psychology of Sport and Exercise journal, the way you feel after just one workout is an actual phenomenon and can even be measured.
In this research study, young females with preexisting body image issues (who also went to the gym regularly) were told randomly to either work out at a moderate intensity for a half hour or sit and read a book quietly.
The researchers measured how the women felt about their bodies before and after the assigned activity. They were questioned about their view on their personal body fat in addition to their strength, confirming that the measure of their own body image wouldn’t be tied to physical appearances in the study.
The females who chose to work out felt both stronger and thinner after exercising for half an hour. Their perception of their body image overall was enhanced post-workout. And not only was it evident that the image-boosting effects happened right away, but these positive effects also lasted for 20 minutes more. The readers? No effect worth mentioning.
In a press release, lead author Kathleen Martin Ginis Ph.D. had this to say:
“We all have those days when we don't feel great about our bodies. This study and our previous research show one way to feel better is to get going and exercise."
So in the end what we have always boasted about is actually scientifically proven. Just one simple workout can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself, so you can imagine the effects if you hit the gym on a regular basis!
