A study published in the Journal Circulation tracked 26,902 healthy men over a 16-year period. It came to a conclusion that men who skipped breakfast were 27% more likely to have a heart attack and coronary heart disease than those who jump-started their day with breakfast. According to an expert from Harvard University, this goes back to the fact that not having a morning meal leads to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity – all of which are well-known risk factors for heart disease.


What to do?

Launch your day with breakfast within 1-2 hours after waking up. Aim for low sugar, high fiber, and high protein choices. An omelet packed with your choice of veggies accompanied with whole wheat toast is a good choice. Pair this meal with fruit and oats tossed in low fat plain yogurt and reap the benefits all day long.


Watch Out Ladies: Skipping breakfast puts you at risk of diabetes!

Researchers from Harvard University School of Public Health analyzed the association between not having breakfast and diabetes risk among 46,289 healthy females over the course of 6 years. The results, which were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that missing breakfast increases the risk of type 2 diabetes by 20%.


The reason is that launching your day without any breakfast leads to a drop in insulin after it has been stable during the night. Having lunch on an empty stomach increases the chance of insulin spiking then decreasing. Over time, this continuous flux in insulin can cause your body to build up an insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.


How to cut your risk? Kick start your day with breakfast, as it helps stabilize blood sugar and insulin levels throughout the day.

Having a healthy breakfast can be your #1 supporter for losing weight because it can reduce hunger during the day and increase your metabolism. Additionally, skipping breakfast can increase your body's insulin response, which leads to storage of fat, weight gain, and eventually, wasting all your efforts to lose weight. Because physical activity is equally important to the diet itself, having breakfast can help you engage more in exercise because it can replenish glycogen stores that supply your muscles with energy.
